Rapid City, SD — Students at Rapid City High School got a first-hand look at careers in the construction and technology industries on Friday.
The event, called Pizza and Hand Tools, gave students the opportunity to visit with participating Black Hills Homebuilders contractors. This event is a great opportunity for contractors and students to meet over some pizza and explore possible careers after high school.
"It gives them the opportunity to come up to us and be able to talk to us, and these people are sometimes on the job site," said Amber Irving, senior manager at Gregg Fullerton State Farm. "For me, I'm in the office and they don't have a chance to go. Walk in the door and realize they can come and work for us."
School administrators said they thanked the contractor for taking the time to visit, as the event was perfect for students looking for summer jobs.

"A lot of our students, especially as they graduate, are concerned about what's going to happen next," said Sean Binder, Capstone coordinator at Rapid City High School."It's unique that they can work directly with all these construction workers and skilled trade workers and really do it for them. They can leave on a good, good day."

This hand tool career exploration event was organized by Rapid City High School geometry and architecture teacher Todd Henriksen.
